One emphasis is on the pragma-dialectical
theory of the Amsterdam School, including contributions by members of
that school. Eveline Feteris examines moral arguments from consequences
from a pragma-dialectical perspective, Harm Kloosterhuis arguments by
analogy, and Jose Plug types of legal argument. Calvin Hayes studies the
rationale for pragma-dialectics and Lawrence Souder sketches a pragma-dialectical
framework for analyzing thought experiments.
Other writers focus on informal logical fallacies: Jonathan Adler
on arguments from ignorance, James G. Edwards on begging the question,
Jean Goodwin and Marco Ruhl on the appeal to authority, and
Lawrence Powers on the ad hominem.
Rhetoric too receives attention, including comparative studies: M.
Neil Browne et al. study the rhetorical burden of the expert witness
while William Mathis considers Hobbes' account of rhetoric. Ralph
Johnson weighs the different approaches to argumentation of logic and
rhetoric, and Robert Kominar tests the merits of rhetoric versus
argumentation in alternative dispute mediation.
